Unfallversicherung – is voluntary insurance. The insurance company pays a fixed amount (a lump sum benefit) as a result of an accident, whether you are injured while playing sports or fall down the stairs at work. You are protected at any time of the day or night, anywhere in the world.

National accident insurance is only paid out if something happens at work, at university, while volunteering or on the way there.

Who needs accident insurance?

For certain people and professional groups Unfallversicherung may be a smart choice. Those who do not have access to public disability insurance may want to consider private insurance. This concerns self-employed, freelancers и housewives - people who do not have legal protection against accidents.

According to the Federal Statistical Office, about 75% of accidents occur not at work, but in free time. Compulsory accident insurance only provides cover for events that occur at the workplace, in the Homeoffice or on the way to and from work. If you want to fill gaps in protection in your daily life and free time - Unfallversicherung for you.

What is an accident?

Insurance companies evaluate whether an accident actually occurred according to strict criteria:

The suddenness of the event - the event that caused the accident must have occurred within a short period of time. This applies, for example, to traffic accidents. Such accidents happen without warning, such as electric shock or falling down stairs. Any lengthy process is not covered. If you have been training with a sprained ligament for several months until one of the ligaments is torn, this is not an insured event.

External force – the damage must be from outside. In the event of a collision with another car, the force comes from outside. Illnesses such as stroke or heart attack are not considered accidents because no external forces were at work. The same applies if you twist your ankle while playing sports for no apparent reason. However, good accident insurance policies also cover accidents caused by certain diseases and accidents caused by physical activity.

involuntariness – you must not have intentionally caused the accident. Self-harm as part of a mental illness or even suicide is usually not covered by insurance.

Damage to health – accident insurance pays the insured amount only if irreparable damage has been caused to your health.

What are the advantages? Unfallversicherung?

Disability insurance

Disability in private accident insurance occurs when the physical or mental abilities of the insured person are irreversibly impaired as a result of an accident. It is necessary to distinguish between complete and partial disability:

  • Complete disability means the complete loss or complete inability to function of body parts or sense organs.
  • In the case of partial disability speak of a partial loss or impairment of the functionality of body parts or sensory organs.

If, for example, an accident results in a functional impairment of 50 percent of the hand, the degree of disability is calculated as 5/10 of the value indicated in Gliedertaxe. If more than one body part is affected, the percentages are added together to score the disability.

What to look for when choosing a tariff?

Sum insured

In case of accident insurance, the disability benefit is determined on the basis of the degree of disability and the pre-agreed sum insured.

We recommend that you rely on your current annual income to determine the sum insured:

Partial disability: at least 3 times annual income.

Total disability: at least 10 times annual income.

joint tax

Gliedertaxe is a system for classifying and assessing the degree of disability or loss of function of various parts of the body, which allows insurance companies to determine appropriate compensation.

Gliedertaxe may vary between insurance companies - the higher the assessment percentage, the higher the insurance payments may be. We recommend navigating to the table below.

Progressive payout system

When using a progressive payment system, insurance compensation increases in proportion to the degree of disability. This means that with higher degrees of disability, the insurance payment will be significantly higher than with lower degrees of disability. This is achieved through compensation, which takes into account payments for lesser degrees of disability.

Calculation example below.

Sum insured

The disability benefit for accident insurance is based on the relevant degree of disability and agreed sum insured. After an accident, the victim may incur a large number of expenses: the cost of refurbishing a house or apartment, the cost of refurbishing a car, the cost of rehabilitation or special care. In addition, it is necessary to continue to service current expenses (for example, loans). Based on these considerations, we recommend relying on the current annual income to calculate the sum insured:

  • Partial disability: at least 3 times annual income
  • Complete disability: at least 10 times annual income

joint tax

What is Glidertax? Gliedertaxe is the main item in the assessment of disability - a table that determines the degree of disability in percentage in case of loss or complete inability to function of certain limbs or other parts of the body. According to the model Gliedertaxe, the following degrees of disability apply in case of loss or complete inability to function of the indicated parts of the body or sense organs:

Standard Grade
Recommended Rating

Hand

Arm above the elbow

Arm below the elbow

Brush

Thumb

Forefinger

Other fingers

Leg above mid-thigh

Leg to mid-thigh

Leg below the knee

Leg to mid-calf

Feet

Big toe

Other fingers

Eye

Hearing in one ear

Smell

Taste

Although many insurers use the same type of tables, in some cases they can differ significantly. We will help you choose the best tariff during a free consultation:

Progressive payout system

As a rule, insurers offer rates with progressions. 225%, 350% и 500%. This means that for higher degrees of disability, the insurance payment increases by a multiple of the sum insured due to compensation for lower degrees of disability.

An example of calculating the payout progression from Sachpool:

How the calculations are made – in case of loss of two legs up to the middle of the calf, at the standard Gliedertaxe rate of 45%, the degree of disability will be 90% (damages are summed up, two legs up to the middle of the calf 45% + 45%).

For example, you are insured for €100 with a progression of 000%. This means that your lump sum will be equal to 300 000 .

What services does/can it cover? Unfallversicherung
