Accounting and tax return apps in Germany

In Germany, both for businesses and private individuals, proper bookkeeping and compliance with tax obligations play a key role in financial planning. The complexities of tax laws can be a challenge for both entrepreneurs and ordinary citizens. The rapid development of technology provides access to programmes that significantly ease accounting processes and simplify tax record-keeping. In this article, we will examine various software solutions specifically created to facilitate the tracking of income and expenses, as well as looking at their application both in a business context and in the daily lives of private individuals in Germany.

Popular tax return software

It is recommended to submit your tax return annually, even if there is no obvious necessity. Many people, whether entrepreneurs or employees, are eligible to write off various expenses from their taxes, on average more than €1,000 a year. Filing a tax return independently will also help avoid additional costs for expensive tax consultations or the services of tax advisors.

We will review 5 popular tax filing software options:

  • Elster — the official portal of the Finanzamt (tax office)

  • WISO Steuer — a professional tool for submitting tax returns and claiming tax refunds, also suitable for entrepreneurs

  • SteuerGo — tax portal for submitting individual tax returns

  • Steuerbot — a light and simple tax return tool for employees, students and trainees in the form of a chatbot
  • Taxfix — another simple tax return chatbot for employees, students and trainees

Elster

Elster is an electronic project of the German Steuerverwaltungen (tax authorities) of all the states and the federal government, for processing tax returns, tax registration and much more via the internet.

The main advantage of Elster is the completely free submission of tax returns, electronic communication with the Finanzamt, the ability to submit applications for a tax class change directly from your personal account, and much more. However, the platform offers no assistance with the tax refund procedure, as it is not in the Finanzamt’s interest to look for ways to save on taxes. Furthermore, preparing a return using Elster can seem complicated, especially for people with little tax experience.

WISO Steuer

WISO Steuer is a professional tool and provides a wide range of features for various categories of taxpayers, including the self-employed, employees, pensioners and others. The programme helps to automate the process of completing tax returns, and provides detailed instructions and guiding prompts for filling out various sections of the form.

With WISO Steuer you do not need a certificate from Elster to submit your tax return electronically. This means you do not have to go through the Elster verification process, which in many cases takes up to two weeks before you receive your access details.

Prices start from €35.99 (for the 2026 version) per year when taking out a subscription. In addition, the company offers professional software support. For €99, you can book a tax advisor to check your completed return thoroughly.

SteuerGo

SteuerGo is a tax portal for submitting tax returns for individuals. The site also has an app, nevertheless the web version is still more convenient. Good guidance when completing the return, multilingual support on weekdays (including English and Russian), payment is made directly for submitting the return.

Suitable for tax returns for employees, students or trainees, but not suitable for more complex cases, for example: the self-employed, entrepreneurs, some investors.

You can calculate your tax refund for free; filing a single return costs €34.95.

Steuerbot

Steuerbot is a simple and straightforward app (as well as a web version) for submitting your tax return. You create your return on your smartphone via a chat — the app asks a question, and you answer.

The app is suitable for the most basic tax returns — for employees, students or Azubis, but not suitable for more complex cases, for example: the self-employed, entrepreneurs, landlords.

Data exchange with the tax office takes place without an Elster certificate.

You can calculate your tax refund for free if you do not have an obligation to file an annual tax return. Filing a single return costs 39.99 euros, if the refund is over €50 or you are required to file a tax return every year (for example, in tax classes 3 and 5).

Taxfix

Taxfix — this is yet another simple tax app with a chat feature. As with Steuerbot, it quickly resolves question after question, and you don’t need to delve into the depths of tax legislation.

With Taxfix, you also won’t have to worry about getting an Elster certificate. The app does not check your tax assessment notice and cannot archive receipts. You can also use Taxfix in your computer’s browser.

Designed for employees, students, civil servants, expats and trainees (Azubis). Not suitable for entrepreneurs and the self-employed.

Cost: from €39.99 for the tax return.

Accounting programs and applications

Modern technologies provide businesses and entrepreneurs in Germany with tools to simplify and automate accounting processes. Financial bookkeeping, invoicing, and compliance with tax obligations are becoming more accessible thanks to a variety of software solutions. Below, we look at 5 programmes that will make it easier for you to handle accounting, track income and expenses, and comply with tax legislation in the context of the German business environment:

  • Lexware Office — one of the most comprehensive, versatile and user-friendly accounting services

  • Papierkram — invoicing for small and medium-sized businesses with a free plan

  • sevDesk — another of the most comprehensive accounting tools on the market

  • Billomat — a powerful accounting tool designed specifically for small and medium-sized enterprises

  • FastBill — an excellent invoicing programme

Lexware Office

Lexware Office – an intuitive and affordable assistant for creating and managing invoices and general accounting. The efficient user interface is easy to understand even for beginners.

The programme is suitable for two types of bookkeeping: EÜR (cash-basis accounting) and P&L. However, you should bear in mind that Lexware Office works only with euros.

Furthermore, it is a powerful tool for invoicing and accounting.

Lexware Office offers a 30-day free trial, and the price varies depending on the plan — from €7.90 a month. We recommend the L tariff for €21.90 per month.

Please note: from 2025 the product is called Lexware Office — the former name lexoffice is no longer used, and the old website address redirects to the new one. If you are looking for the software under the old name, you will end up in the same place.

Papierkram

Papierkram is an accounting tool specially designed for small and medium-sized businesses and freelancers. It helps with essential office tasks: from creating invoices to recording receipts and generating tax returns.

The service has a free document processing plan — with it you can create invoices and quotes, manage receipts, record expenses, track working hours and much more completely free of charge.

It only works with euros and is more suited for invoicing rather than full bookkeeping. Paid versions start from €12.90 a month with annual prepayment.

sevDesk

sevDesk is one of the most comprehensive accounting tools on the market, remaining user-friendly despite its many features. It is suitable for two types of accounting (EÜR and P&L) and offers numerous integrations and extensions.

sevDesk was developed specifically for small companies and the self-employed who want to spend as little time as possible on bookkeeping.

In addition, the platform has the ability to issue invoices in foreign currency and integration with email services. There is a 14-day free trial period.

The accounting plan costs from €19.90 per month when paying for 24 months.

Billomat

Billomat is a powerful accounting tool designed specifically for small and medium-sized enterprises.

Billomat’s extensive range of features includes all the important functions for invoicing. When it comes to bookkeeping, Billomat also covers all the essential aspects: from automatic payment reconciliation and reliable receipt management to the creation of EÜR reports. There is integration with e-commerce platforms (e.g. WooCommerce and Shopify).

The platform supports invoices in foreign currencies. There is a 14-day trial period.

Cost from €19 per month when paid annually.

Update: the service is working, but has changed ownership — it is now operated by the Berlin-based company aifinyo AG rather than the previous Nuremberg firm.

FastBill

FastBill is an excellent invoicing program, but unfortunately its accounting functions pale in comparison to other participants in our review.

Self-employed individuals and small businesses can automate the entire invoicing process, from estimates to creating invoices and payment reminders, as well as preparing accounts. There is integration with email services and invoicing in foreign currency.

Cost from €9 when paying annually.

Tax return deadlines: current dates

Covid extensions have ended — standard deadlines apply starting from the 2025 tax return.

For which yearOn your ownThrough a tax advisor
202431.07.202530 April 2026 — the final extended deadline
202531.07.202601.03.2027 — 28 February falls on a Sunday
20262 August 2027 — Saturday 31 July29.02.2028

A detail that is hardly ever mentioned: the extended “adviser” deadline does not apply to voluntary tax returns. If you are applying of your own accord rather than because you are obliged to, the adviser will not extend the deadline.

Who is required to submit a tax return?

  • income not subject to withholding tax at source over €410 per year;
  • benefits that affect the tax rate — Elterngeld (parental allowance), Kurzarbeitergeld (short-time work allowance), Arbeitslosengeld (unemployment benefit), Krankengeld (sickness benefit) — over €410;
  • salary at the same time from several employers;
  • spouses who are taxed jointly, if one of them is in tax class V or VI, or a factor has been included for Class IV;
  • a Freibetrag, i.e. a tax-free allowance, has been entered in your wage tax records, and your salary exceeds the set limit;
  • your annual wage tax certificate shows the letter S — tax on a one-off payment was calculated without taking previous employment relationships into account;
  • The marriage was dissolved this year and one of the spouses has remarried.

Voluntary filing: up to four years back

If you are not obliged to file, you can submit a tax return for the previous four years. In 2026, the following years are still open:

2022until 31 December 2026 — the last year for this return
2023by 31/12/2027
2024until 31 December 2028
2025until 31 December 2029

What happens if you’re late?

The late-filing surcharge is 0.25 % of tax due for each month or part thereof, subject to a minimum of €25 per month, up to a maximum of €25,000. It is imposed automatically if the tax return is not submitted within 14 months of the end of the tax year.

But there is an important exception that allays the fear of most readers: the surcharge is not imposed, if the tax is zero or negative, and also if the assessed tax does not exceed the amounts and advance payments already withheld. Put simply: If you are due a refund according to your tax return, there shouldn’t be a late-filing penalty.

What you can deduct: amounts for 2026

The programme will suggest these items itself, but it is useful to know them – many people miss half of them.

WhatHow much
Lump-sum work expenses€1,230 a year — taken into account automatically, no evidence required
The way to workFrom 2026 — €0.38 per kilometre from the FIRST kilometre, maximum €4,500 per year. For the 2025 tax return and earlier, the old rule applies: €0.30 for the first 20 km and €0.38 from the 21st onwards
Working from home€6 a day, maximum €1,260 a year (that’s 210 days)
Separate home office€1,260 per year flat rate — if the home office is the centre of all your activities
Subsistence allowance€28 for a full 24-hour period, €14 for the day of arrival or departure, and for absences exceeding 8 hours. The limit is three months at a single location
Tradespeople’s work in your home20 % of the cost of the work, up to a maximum of €1,200. Labour costs only; requires an invoice and cashless payment
Home services (cleaning, gardener, care)20 %, maximum €4,000
Domestic worker on a minijob20 %, maximum €510 — this item is the one most often forgotten
Donationsup to 20 % of total income; for amounts up to €300, a bank statement is sufficient in place of a certificate
Relocation for work€964.18 per applicant plus €642.79 for each additional family member; in the event of a repeat move within five years — a supplement of 50 %

What’s new in ELSTER

New releaseWhat you get
einfachELSTERplusInstead of complex forms, a simple step-by-step wizard. Suitable for employees living in Germany who are filing their tax return alone and do not claim for children. Free
ElsterSecureLog in without the certificate file — via mobile device. Registration can be completed right in the app
Meine Belege (My receipts)Document storage in the personal account, up to 100 MB. Documents are not sent to the tax office automatically — you decide for yourselves whether to link them to the tax return
MeinELSTER+ appPhotographing paper receipts and uploading them to the dashboard; with correct categorisation, the data is automatically populated into the required fields
eInvoice viewerFree service for reading XML invoices — the minimal way to fulfil the obligation to receive electronic invoices

Specially for our audience. Of the services listed on this page SteuerGo has a full Russian-language interface — it is the only major German tax service where you can complete your return in Russian. There are also English, Polish and Romanian versions. If German is still proving difficult, this is the most sensible start: the tax return itself goes to the tax office in German, while you understand what you are filling in.

What a program must be able to do in 2026–2028

If you are an entrepreneur, the choice of software is now determined not by convenience, but by legal requirements for electronic invoices.

DateWhat is mandatory
from 01.01.2025Accepting electronic invoices is mandatory for all entrepreneurs, including small ones. Recipient consent is not required. Minimum requirements: a working email address and any XML viewer
until 31 December 2026You can issue paper or PDF — with the recipient’s consent
from 1 January 2027Issuing electronic invoices is mandatory for those whose turnover in the previous year exceeded 800.000 €
from 01.01.2028The obligation to issue e-invoices applies to everyone in transactions between businesses within Germany

Acceptable formats: XRechnung (pure XML) and ZUGFeRD from version 2.0.1 onwards – except the MINIMUM and BASIC-WL profiles. A regular PDF is not an e-invoice. Good software should not only generate such an invoice, but also check it with a validator.

Small business owners are exempt from issuing electronic invoices — their invoices can always be sent in the usual way. However, they too must be able to receive e-invoices.

GoBD requirements (German rules for electronic bookkeeping and record-keeping)

In addition to invoice format, the software must provide immutability of records with a change log, full traceability and data export for tax audit. The work procedure description (Verfahrensdokumentation) itself is the company’s obligation, not the software’s, but serious services provide a template for it.

The current version of the regulations was updated in July 2025 and, in particular, simplified storage: for electronic invoices, it is sufficient to keep the structured part, and the human-readable version only if it contains additional relevant information. And also: the retention period for invoices has been reduced from ten to eight years.

Free options

Prices for paid services change several times a year, so always check the final amount on the provider’s website. As a guide for August 2026: accounting services for a single person cost roughly 8 to 13 € per month, tax software for private individuals costs 35 to 46 € per return, while ELSTER is always free.

  1. Good afternoon, if I occasionally need consultations on accounting or working in Lexware, can I contact you somehow? I also speak Russian. Thanks in advance for your reply.

    1. Hello Yana.
I am not an accountant or tax adviser.
I am unfortunately unable to help you with that.
