Natural gas is the most popular fuel in Germany for heating: approximately every second household uses it to heat a house or apartment – in the case of rented apartments, three out of four households heat with gas.

On average, about 85% of the consumed gas is used for heating, about 14% for hot water and only 1% for cooking.

In 2023, thanks to the reduction in the VAT rate and the slowdown in prices to 12 cents, the cost of gas has significantly decreased compared to 2022. We recommend comparing the cost of your tariff with current prices and, if necessary, changing the gas supplier.

Gas prices in Germany

In 2023, the government introduced a brake on gas prices. The marginal price at the moment is 12 cents per kilowatt-hour. Braking is active from the beginning March 2023 to the end of 2023 with the possibility of extension until April 2024. Prices for new customers are often well below this price cap, as Germany came out of the winter with full gas storage and was able to largely replace the gas that used to come from Russia with supplies from other countries.

Germany survived the cold season better than many experts expected. Norway, the Netherlands and Belgium now supply most of the gas to Germany. However, Germany currently imports much less natural gas than it did before Russia cut off supplies. Thus, saving is still on the agenda – for both households and industry. The gas shortage continues.

We recommend comparing the current gas prices with your current contract and, if necessary, changing the supplier by choosing the most favorable tariff using well-known aggregators, such as CHECK24.

How to calculate your gas consumption?

According to the current heating index, on average per year, one household consumes about 120 kilowatt hours per square meter of living space. However, this indicator is very individual, not only because of the personal temperature preferences of the family, but also because of the energy efficiency of the house.

To understand your heating costs, we recommend focusing on previous annual calculations. If you have just moved into a new house or apartment, you will find the consumption data in the energy certificate of the house.
