VERY FREQUENTLY THERE IS A CONFUSION BETWEEN STEUERNUMMER AND STEUER-ID

Let's figure out what is the difference between Steuer-ID (identification number in Germany) and Steuernummer (tax number in Germany) and where to get it.

Your smile is in good hands: dental insurance!

We are used to TIN - Taxpayer Identification Number, as it is called in Russia, assigned to a person at birth, and does not change anymore.

In Germany, the analogue of the INN is Steuer-ID. This is a permanent identification number for people living in Germany.

Steur ID comprises 11 digits and every German citizen receives it automatically at birth or registration.

tax number – a tax number in Germany, which a person receives at the Finanzamt at the place of residence of the taxpayer.

tax number comprises 13 numbers.

Thus, when moving to Germany, a person receives a new tax number (Steuernummer) and another tax office (Finanzamt) is responsible for it at the new place of residence.

Why are there two different tax numbers?

The story is that there used to be only Steuernummer. But with the introduction of electronic document management through ELSTER in 2007, a unified tax identification number, Steuer-ID, was introduced. In the future, it is planned to completely abandon the old Steuernummer and only Steuer-ID will remain.

  1. What type of document is needed from my employer for income tax age or maybe I don’t know what kind of money we can make a tax refund.
I would like to come to you with this document and, if possible, explain to me what this document is called in German, so that I ask my employer to give it to me and how much to pay you for the services?
    Thank you very much

    1. Hello.
To file your taxes, you will likely need a document from your employer that shows your income for the year. This document is often called an income certificate or income form. In Germany, such a document is called “Lohnsteuerbescheinigung”.

You will need a tax advisor to prepare your tax return; I cannot help you with that.
The cost of preparing and filing your tax return may vary depending on the complexity of your financial situation and the tax advisor you choose. Some consultants charge by the hour, while others offer flat rates for services.
