Answering a frequent question: mandatory pension contributions for the self-employed.
The self-employed include Selbstständige and Freiberufler.
Since 2019, the government has been discussing making pension contributions compulsory for the self-employed as well.
Currently, contributions are voluntary for most entrepreneurs. There are professions for which contributions have always been mandatory, but we are sure those lucky people already know about this.
The government has planned mandatory pension contributions for ALL entrepreneurs starting from 2024.
Main aspects:
Contributions must be protected against confiscation and seizure, both by the entrepreneur themselves and by any potential creditors.
The law will apply to entrepreneurs who are under 35 years of age.
Contributions must generate a pension above the minimum basic level. Today, this is around €800.
