In Germany, different institutions are responsible for the procedure for the recognition of educational documents, depending on their type. For school certificates, this is done in the departments of institutions for the recognition of documents on education (Zeugnisanerkennungsstellen) federal states, which can be found in the database Anabin.
Central Office for Foreign Education (ZAB) deals with the recognition of academic diplomas and maintains a database (Anabin) where you can check whether your higher education diploma will be recognized. To apply for recognition of a document, you need to apply directly to ZAB.
You can find out more about the recognition of professional education diplomas on the website - "Search system for the recognition of diplomas". To do this, you need to enter the name of your profession or select it from the AZ list on the site and indicate the name of your city. The system will tell you which institution is responsible for the recognition of your diploma in Germany, depending on your specialty.
At the stage of searching for the necessary information, I used the help netzwerk-iq.de, which provides advice on the recognition of a diploma. Their website has a list of organizations in the various states of Germany that you can write or call for more information.
Second step: collecting and sending the necessary documents
Go to website -> choose there Allgemeines zur Anerkennung - we find what you need, I had Anerkennung im beruflichen Bereich - go to Zeugnisbewertung.
There will be information “on the case”. To fill it out, you need to go to “Antrag” and you will already see the long-awaited form to fill out. After filling it out and clicking send, a letter arrives! There is already your unique number and the paper that you filled out.
Well, according to the old German digitalized story - we print it out and sign it.

Then you must collect all the necessary documents for the recognition of your diploma. As a rule, this includes your diploma, grade statement, passport copy, high school diploma (yes, it was on the list). All this in NORMAL COPIES AND NO TRANSLATIONS / NO REPRESENTATIONS. It’s also important to check that you have a form of study (mine was written full-time), if you need to request it (but in 99% of cases it’s exactly what you have).
Third step: submit documents
Once you have collected all the necessary documents, you must send them to ZAB. So that you know when it has arrived, invest in an Einschreibenbrief (3.6 euros).
Fourth step: obtaining confirmation of documents - payment
Have you received the documents? Great, you saw it in the email you were tracking. Then we sit and wait for the bill to arrive. The first confirmation that everything was received came just 3 weeks later. Yes, for so long, that is, they haven’t started doing anything yet. They looked at them and gave you an invoice - amount 200 euros.
As soon as you pay for them, they will reach the addressee via cockroaches, then the taker will accept the payment and processing will begin. The letter indicated that they would process it for as long as a week (!), but I already received confirmation the next day and I was prepared to wait three months (stated).
SHOCK CONTENT:
I was recognized EXACTLY for a calendar week, I don’t know which Gods of Olympus to make a sacrifice, but the fact remains.
I think a few things worked:
– He indicated that I needed it FOR work (and they added bluecards everywhere);
– Sent a work contract, which was a necessity to start work, and not on a whim;
– I wrote to them why I need it faster and how long I’ve been knocking on the thresholds of the ABH.
Or I'm not nasty 🙂
Fifth step: using confirmation
After your documents have been processed, you will receive an email. There will be:
- If your documents are not recognized, then your application will be rejected (sadness and longing).
- Partially confirmed - in such a case, you may need additional courses or examinations for the full recognition of your diploma in the country where you plan to use your knowledge and qualifications.
- Confirmation of the successful recognition of your qualifications (short opinion/full opinion).
