Basic supplemental dental insurance

Basic dental insurance - dental prevention

Supplemental dental insurance helps to significantly reduce the cost of dental treatment and prevention by complementing state health insurance. We have selected tariffs that will suit those who do not have serious dental problems, but who want to protect themselves against unexpected expenses.

Low insurance premiums combined with effective coverage for dental services using modern, high-quality materials.

Tariffs with coverage of treatment and prevention

We have selected three affordable supplementary dental insurance plans offering basic cover for dental treatment and preventative care (including professional cleanings). All plans include 100% cover for dental treatment, but have limited cover for prosthetics and orthodontic treatment. None of the plans have a waiting period. The years in the limits are calendar years: the first ends on 31 December of the year in which the policy starts. For treatment after an accident that happens while the policy is in force, the limits do not apply.

If you do not have serious dental health problems, these tariffs will make a wonderful addition to your state medical insurance.

The tariffs we have selected are a great option for basic dental coverage and preventative care. However, if you require extended insurance that includes orthodontic treatment or prosthetics, we recommend reading our articles dedicated to more comprehensive dental insurance programmes. There you will find tariffs with higher cover limits and additional services.

Frequently asked questions about basic supplemental dental insurance

A basic plan is designed for what almost everyone needs sooner or later: fillings, root canal treatment and periodontitis treatment. It usually pays up to 100% of these bills, including the share paid by the Krankenkasse (statutory health insurer). It also covers professional teeth cleaning (PZR), which is not part of the statutory benefits catalogue; many Kassen only pay a subsidy towards it. Prosthetics are limited or not included at all. Full plans are built around Zahnersatz (dental prostheses such as implants and crowns) and cost more. If your teeth are healthy and no prosthetics are on the horizon, basic cover is usually enough.
The Krankenkasse (statutory health insurer) pays for fillings, root canal and periodontitis treatment without a co-payment, but only in the standard version. For inlays or bonded composite fillings in the back teeth you pay the extra cost yourself under a Mehrkostenvereinbarung (additional cost agreement). For prosthetics the Kasse only pays a Festzuschuss (fixed subsidy): 60% of the Regelversorgung (standard treatment), 70% with a Bonusheft (dental check-up record) kept for 5 years and 75% for 10 years. For a Heil- und Kostenplan (treatment and cost plan) approved from 1 January 2027, these rates fall to 50%, 60% and 65%. A basic plan with limited prosthetics cover only closes part of that gap.
Yes, many plans pay from day one. Instead of a Wartezeit (waiting period), though, they usually apply a Zahnstaffel (benefit cap for the first years): for example €500 in the first year, €1,000 over the first two years and so on, until the cap falls away after three to five years. Years are often counted by the calendar, so if your policy starts in November, the first year ends on 31 December. Treatment that a dentist recommended or started before you took out the policy is not covered by a standard plan. For that situation we have a separate page: “If treatment has already been started or is planned”.
For children under 18 the Krankenkasse (statutory health insurer) only pays for orthodontic treatment if the misalignment is pronounced, meaning KIG (orthodontic indication group) 3 to 5. Even then, parents first pay 20% themselves (10% for a sibling treated at the same time) and get it back once treatment has been completed successfully. With KIG 1 or 2 you pay for everything yourself. The basic plans on this page pay between €1,000 and €2,000 towards children’s orthodontics. Take out cover before the first visit to the orthodontist: once the need for treatment has been established, the insurer will not pay for it. For adults the Kasse only pays for severe jaw anomalies that require surgery, and basic plans usually only after an accident.
Their correct name is Alterungsrückstellungen (ageing reserves): part of your premium that the insurer sets aside for when you are older. A plan with them costs more at the start, but the premium stays more stable over the years. Without them you start cheaper, but the premium rises in steps with each new age group. For example, Allianz MeinZahnschutz 75 without ageing reserves costs €8.43 a month up to age 20, €12.94 at 21 to 30 and €27.10 at 51 to 60 (Allianz figures as at September 2026). Neither option rules out every increase: if treatment costs rise, the insurer reviews premiums. If you are young and plan to stay insured for a long time, I would look at the version with reserves.
Yes. Allianz, for example, offers MeinZahnschutz online up to age 64, provided no more than three missing teeth have not been replaced, and the price tables on this page include age groups over 60. But do the maths more carefully than at 30: the premium is higher, the health questions ask about your teeth, treatment already recommended is not covered, and the Zahnstaffel (benefit cap for the first years) limits payouts early on. In my consultations I see that after 60 most bills are for prosthetics. So a basic plan without Zahnersatz (dental prostheses) often does little at this age, especially as the share paid by the Krankenkasse (statutory health insurer) for prosthetics falls from 2027.

Paediatric dentistry in Germany

Healthy teeth are not only a beautiful smile, but also an important factor in a child’s overall health. In Germany, basic dental care for children is covered by statutory health insurance (GKV), although the scope of these services is limited. Many parents face a situation where they have to choose between a standard procedure and a higher-quality alternative—often a paid one. In this article, we will explain in detail which services are included in basic insurance, where additional costs may arise, and how supplementary dental insurance helps to expand the range and quality of treatment without overpaying for every doctor’s visit.
