Beauty business insurance

Everyone knows that car insurance is essential for a vehicle and travel insurance for trips. We regularly make pension contributions and often encounter corporate liability insurance in business. However, the insurance system in Germany is so developed that there is protection against unforeseen financial expenses for almost every area of activity.

Today we will discuss insurance policies designed for the health and beauty sector.

Business insurance in Germany

In Germany, business insurance is an essential component for ensuring the financial security of entrepreneurs across all fields of activity, including the health and beauty sector. Regardless of the size of the company or work experience, having insurance helps to minimise risks associated with third-party damage, employees, equipment and even financial losses.

Representatives of the health and beauty industry can be entrepreneurs in a wide variety of fields:

  • Hairdressers
  • Beauty therapists
  • Nail technicians
  • Massage therapists
  • Makeup artists
  • Spa specialists
  • Dietitians
  • Fitness and yoga instructors

All these professionals work with clients directly, so they are exposed to risks associated with potential damage to clients’ health or property. In addition, it is important to consider protection against unforeseen expenses related to legal issues, damage to property or equipment, and business interruptions.

Using the examples of hairdressers, nail technicians and beauticians, we will select the ideal combination of insurance modules for comprehensive protection. These professionals are particularly in need of insurance products such as:

  1. Betriebshaftpflichtversicherung (business liability insurance) — protection against claims from customers in the event of injury or property damage.
  2. Berufshaftpflichtversicherung (professional indemnity insurance) — cover for errors that may occur during the provision of services.
  3. Sachversicherung (property insurance) — protection of a salon or studio against damage related to fire, theft or natural disasters.
  4. Rechtsschutzversicherung (legal expenses insurance) — legal assistance and cover for legal costs in disputes with clients, suppliers or landlords.

And others. Each type of insurance helps to minimise risks and protect the business from financial loss, which is especially important for beauty and health practitioners who work with clients every day.

Insurance for hairdressers and beauty salons

As a hairdresser in Germany, you are responsible to your clients for your work. This responsibility lies both with each individual stylist and with the salon manager.

And to pursue your passion without worrying about potential financial losses, there is hairdresser insurance.

What insurance do hairdressers need

In the beauty and hairdressing industry, you need nerves of steel as well as professionalism. After all, tools sometimes get damaged or broken, clients have allergic reactions or hair damage, and mistakes happen in cutting and colouring.

And it doesn’t matter whether you work for yourself as a hairdresser or have opened a salon with employees. You must always think about how to protect yourself and your business from potential losses.

Company liability insurance (Betriebshaftpflichtversicherung)

Probably the most important insurance for hairdressers is public liability insurance. Business liability insurance protects you from the financial consequences in the event of property damage or bodily injury to third parties.

And there are plenty of risk factors in this profession: sharp scissors, hair damage from blow-drying, the use of styling appliances, and chemical exposure to the hair during colouring and other procedures.

Protection extends to all company employees.

Examples of insured events

What damages will the insurance cover if the hair salon has public liability insurance:

The client has developed an allergy to the hair care products in your salon. Insurance will cover the treatment and compensation for pain and suffering.

During hair lightening, the product got onto the client’s clothes and ruined her blouse. Insurance will pay for dry cleaning or the replacement of the clothing.

Products sold or used have caused medical issues for the customer

A fashion model had her hair styled at your salon. Afterwards, she started losing her hair due to an allergy to the styling products. This became very noticeable, and she lost advertising contracts. You are facing a lawsuit for the reimbursement of medical treatment costs and loss of earnings.

While straightening a client’s hair, you got chatting and left the straighteners on for too long. The hair is ruined, and the strand had to be cut off. The insurer will check the claim and, if it is confirmed, pay for the damage. So you won’t be left with unexpected costs, which in this case turned out to be far from small.

During a beard trim, the barber cut the client. The wound is deep. It will need stitches, and there will be a scar. The client turned out to be a lawyer who will miss several working days because of the cut and is demanding compensation.

You are an experienced tradesperson and never make mistakes in your work. However, your business is expanding and you are taking on more employees. If they cause harm to a client, you are also held responsible. In this case, company liability insurance protects both you and your workers.

There is a beautiful rug at the entrance to your salon. A client caught their heel on it, stumbled and broke their phone. Now they are demanding compensation. If the rug was a trip hazard, you have breached your duty to keep visitors safe (Verkehrssicherungspflicht) and are liable for the damage. Public liability insurance protects you in this case too: it pays a justified claim and rejects an unjustified one.

Contents insurance for your salon (Inhaltsversicherung)

A hairdresser’s work involves the daily use of water and electricity. This increases the risk of damage from fire or flooding. Your salon could also fall victim to burglary, vandalism, flooding or a natural disaster.

To protect the furniture, fixtures and fittings, tools, materials, equipment and electronics in your salon, you need to take out property insurance. And then you will be guaranteed the repair or replacement of damaged property.

For example
During the winter holidays, your salon was flooded due to a sewage pipe burst. A short circuit occurred in the sockets and now all the wiring is ruined.

Commercial legal expenses insurance (Firmenrechtsschutzversicherung)

In the event of legal disputes, the insurer will cover lawyers’ and court fees, can put you in touch with lawyers for advice and will find the best solution for each dispute.

Legal disputes, even for large companies, can be very costly. Not to mention the self-employed or small companies. They do not have their own legal department or legal experts.

The company’s legal protection package has many modules and can cover your exact insurance needs.

What does the insurance cover if a hairdresser has commercial legal expenses insurance?

Examples of insured events

You have dismissed an employee and they are spreading rumours that are damaging to your company. You will receive help to defend your rights, and the costs of legal proceedings will be covered.

Residents of the housing complex where you work are complaining about the noise and demanding that the salon be closed. The insurer will cover the costs of the legal dispute.

How to save money when taking out insurance

If you are prepared to pay for minor damage yourself (the so-called excess), by changing the excess amount from €50 to €1,000 you can see how the cost of the insurance changes.

Insurance for nail technicians

Manicurists work in close contact with their clients. Whether it is a manicure or a pedicure, you are always working directly with people. And this imposes a high degree of responsibility, because even minor mistakes can have significant consequences. And no one is immune to mistakes.

Clients are confident in your professionalism. And you can be sure that your business and liability are protected if you have these three basic insurances:

Public liability insurance (Betriebshaftpflicht) for manicure and pedicure technicians

As you work directly with your clients, the risk of causing harm to your client’s health or appearance is higher than in other professions, and compensation claims for bodily injury are often very expensive. It is all the more important that you have adequate insurance cover for such an eventuality. We therefore strongly recommend that you have public liability insurance (Betriebshaftpflichtversicherung).

You certainly know more about the risk factors for manicurists than we do: cuts, burns and allergic reactions to the materials used. And a client can always make a claim about the quality of the service or any harm caused.

Examples of insured events

What does the insurance cover if a nail (pedicure) technician has company liability insurance:

The stylist accidentally drops a brush with red nail polish onto the client’s trousers and loafers. Insurance will settle the incurred damage.

The beauty therapist used a cream that caused severe irritation on the client’s hands. They had to visit a dermatologist for treatment afterwards.

Business contents insurance (Geschäftsinhaltsversicherung) for a nail salon

This insurance will protect your fixtures and fittings, furniture, tools and beauty products from potential damage caused by fire, burst water or sewage pipes, burglary, vandalism, floods, hail and storms.

For example, burglars broke into a nail salon and stole all the products and equipment from both the salon floor and the stockroom. Repairs need to be done and the stolen items bought again. Insurance covers this.

Or over the weekend, while nobody was there, a tap burst and flooded the entire floor. The sockets are out of order, the furniture is ruined, and the bottom shelves and their contents have become unusable.

Commercial legal expenses insurance (Firmenrechtsschutz) for nail technicians

This is insurance that covers the cost of legal disputes involving your beauty business if they arise from your professional activity. If a dispute cannot be avoided, it can be expensive. Legal expenses insurance for nail technicians helps you stay financially stable and protects you against sudden large costs.

In the event of legal disputes, the insurer will cover lawyers’ and court fees, can put you in touch with lawyers for advice and will find the best solution.

Examples of insured events

You work not only in the salon but also on home visits. When you arrived at a client’s home, you parked your car by the entrance and then, looking out of the window, saw a neighbour scratch the wing of your car. He did not admit fault and refused to pay, so the matter went to court. Legal expenses insurance will cover your legal costs if your policy includes the Verkehrs-Rechtsschutz (motor legal protection) module. The basic Firmenrechtsschutz does not cover disputes involving your car.

You are self-employed and have submitted a tax return. However, a tax official questioned the amount you claimed for depreciation and reduced your refund. You can take the case to the tax court (Finanzgericht) to get your money back. Legal expenses insurance will pay the costs of these proceedings.

Insurance for cosmetologists in Germany

Every day you work with clients. Despite your professionalism, knowledge, experience and carefulness when working with cosmetic products, accidents can still happen. If a client demands compensation from you, you could face high costs that you are not at all prepared for at that moment.

To offer your clients a flawless level of service at the highest standard, you must concentrate and work calmly, without thinking about potential financial claims or emergencies. Clients are confident in your professionalism. And you can be confident that your business and liability are protected if you are insured.

Public liability insurance

Protects you and your staff. Covers bodily injury, property damage, the resulting financial loss and environmental damage.

Example of public liability insurance (Betriebshaftpflicht) cover:
A female client came to your salon for eyelash extensions. During the procedure, you accidentally got eyelash glue in her eye. This led to a temporary deterioration in her vision. The woman was forced to miss her tram driver shifts. Medical assistance and the payment of compensation were required.

Business property insurance

protection of the property of your beauty salon or cosmetic clinic, warehouse, goods, materials and instruments, appliances and equipment.

You need this insurance in case of a fire, flood, burglary or natural disaster. You will be reimbursed for the cost of destroyed or damaged property, or your repairs will be paid for.

Example of commercial property insurance payout:
Burglars broke into your beauty salon and stole the new equipment for face and body treatments. In this case, your beauty salon’s property insurance is activated.

Legal protection of the company

You have years of experience and an established client base. However, one client was unhappy with the result of the procedures and is now writing bad reviews about you on Instagram, Facebook, Google Maps, and under your videos, thereby damaging your reputation, even though it is only their subjective opinion and, from the perspective of procedural protocol, as well as the medical and aesthetic result, everything was done correctly on your part.

In this case, legal expenses insurance can help, provided your policy includes the reputation protection module (Reputations-Rechtsschutz). It reimburses the costs of a lawyer, court fees and consultations with independent lawyers and mediators.

With legal expenses insurance for your beauty salon, you get protection not only for yourself but also for your staff.

How much does business insurance cost in Germany

The cost depends on the size of your company, existing risks in the industry, the number of people insured, and the amount of desired insurance payout. In addition, the following factors have an effect:

  • How many employees (full-time, freelance) do you have?
  • do you rent premises for a salon
  • do you use a car for work
  • date of registration of your business
  • how much is the rent, if there is any
  • do you have any branches
  • how many hours do you and the staff work
  • have you previously had similar insurance
  • Have you had any legal disputes in the past 5 years?
  • your annual turnover
  • amount of wages paid
  • Your activity must be registered in Germany

Frequently asked questions about insurance for beauty professionals

Betriebshaftpflicht (public liability insurance) is not required by law: the IHK (chamber of commerce) treats it as voluntary, though it labels it “dringend empfohlen” (strongly recommended). What is compulsory is gesetzliche Unfallversicherung (statutory accident insurance), which for beauty businesses is the BGW. Every salon must register with it, and contributions for staff start with your first hire. Owners of hair salons and self-employed foot care practitioners are insured there themselves from day one, even when working alone. But the BGW pays for injuries to you or your staff, not to clients. Without Betriebshaftpflicht, a client’s chemical burn or allergic reaction comes out of your own pocket.

For beauty professionals the difference is mostly the name. The market often uses Berufshaftpflicht (professional liability insurance) and Betriebshaftpflicht (public liability insurance) interchangeably, and both cover the same thing: injury to clients and damage to their belongings, plus the financial loss that follows. What you should compare is something else. First, are all your treatments listed in the policy? Second, how is your training documented? At die Haftpflichtkasse, for example, cover only applies to what your Aus- or Fortbildung (training or further training) qualifies you to do, and proof is required when you apply or after a claim.

Usually not as a separate policy, and I would not pay extra for one. A beautician’s main risk is injury to a client or damage to her belongings. Earnings the client loses because of an injury are paid by Betriebshaftpflicht (public liability insurance) as a consequence of that injury. Pure financial loss with no injury or damage is already included up to €100,000 in die Haftpflichtkasse’s policy for beauty businesses, including claims over data protection breaches. It does not pay DSGVO (GDPR) fines. A separate policy is mainly for people whose work is giving advice or handling other people’s money.

Not if only the result is the problem. Redoing the work or giving a refund are your obligations under the contract, and under the general liability terms (AHB) Betriebshaftpflicht (public liability insurance) does not pay for them, nor for a discount. It is different if hair or skin is harmed, for example a chemical burn to the scalp or an allergic reaction after colouring. The insurer will check such a claim, pay for treatment and compensation if it is justified and reject it if it is not, in court if need be. So note which product you used and for how long.

It depends on the policy, so check your treatments line by line. Die Haftpflichtkasse’s Betriebshaftpflicht (public liability insurance) for beauty businesses covers laser and IPL hair removal, fruit acid peels, microneedling and sunbeds, even minor surgery in foot care, but only within your training. Permanent make-up, microblading, piercing and tattoos are excluded; permanent make-up and microblading can be added for an extra premium, recorded in the policy schedule. The law adds rules of its own: since 31 December 2022 laser and IPL work requires Fachkunde (certified competence) under the NiSV, and since the end of 2020 only doctors may remove tattoos or permanent make-up by laser.

In die Haftpflichtkasse’s calculator on this page, the premium for Betriebshaftpflicht (public liability insurance) depends on how many people work in the business, including you. Cover for up to five people with a €3 million sum insured costs €178.50 a year including insurance premium tax; each additional person adds €35.70, and part-time staff count as half. Paying annually is cheapest: half-yearly costs 3% more, quarterly 5%. Basic personal liability cover for the owner is also included at no extra cost. Compare it with your own policy before renewing, although it ends when the salon’s policy ends.
