PassportCard is a new kind of health insurance for expats. With PassportCard, you get a free debit card that is directly linked to your insurance rather than your personal finances. Using this card, you can access medical treatments or medication in real time with any doctor—without prior approval and without needing to ask the doctor for a price quote in advance.
No more bureaucracy—all management through the app with no need to submit a request or wait for refund approval.
What is PassportCard?
PassportCard is an international health insurance policy with no excess, backed by the insurance companies Allianz and VyV/MGEN (in Germany). It is the first health insurance company to offer real-time payouts — right where you actually need them.
PassportCard will do:
- to students
- to holders of a Chancenkarte visa
- for a semester abroad
- to foreigners with a freelancer visa
and to other expats who need medical insurance for a period up to 5 years.
If you are an employee, you need to conclude state or private medical insurance.
PassportCard benefits
- 24/7 customer support in German, English and other languages.
- Comprehensive health insurance including medical repatriation, childbirth, surgery and much more.
- Fast and simple. Phone connection in just 10 seconds. Real-time payouts instead of lengthy application processes.
- You receive a free debit card that is directly linked to insurance funds rather than your personal finances. Using this card, you can pay for medical services with any doctor — without prior authorisation and without having to request a preliminary cost estimate from the doctor.
How PassportCard works
1
Apply for a PassportCard
Access to medical care in the countries of the selected tariff zone (for Germany, worldwide except the USA): no advance payments, no red tape. Whether it’s back pain from long hours working together or unexpected flu — PassportCard
available for you 24/7.
2
Top up your debit card via the app
Request a top-up of your card for the amount required for the treatment using the app. This means that the treatment costs are covered directly by the insurance company.
3
Pay for the doctor’s services with a PassportCard
Just show the card to the doctor, at the pharmacy or hospital—the costs will be covered immediately. No paperwork, no upfront payments. Whether it’s a routine check-up, prescription medicine or emergency care—you won’t have to pay a thing out of your own pocket.

In partnership with Allianz, PassportCard offers you three solutions with different levels of cover to suit your needs. All tariffs offer comprehensive cover for expenses not only in your host country, but throughout the entire tariff region (for EU countries, this is worldwide except the USA).
