Pet health insurance: what to look out for when choosing

1. Take out pet insurance while your animal is healthy. Otherwise, the insurance company may refuse to cover treatment if it is discovered that the animal already had a diagnosis or genetic conditions that you were aware of.

2. Insuring older animals costs more, and the monthly payment depends on size and breed.

3. Carefully examine the insurance terms, as the waiting period (Wartezeit) before the policy takes effect can be up to six months.

4. Find out what you can expect when treating your animal by carefully studying the insurance offer. There are numerous tariffs in pet medical insurance, ranging from the coverage amount to the excess and the payment for operations only.

5. Are you travelling with your pet? Please check if your insurance includes the option for treatment abroad.

Insurance terms and conditions

  • The size of the premium depends on the age of your pet.
  • Payment: every 1/3/6/12 months.
  • When the age limit is reached, the insurance contract concluded before this period remains in force.
  • The total sickness waiting period is 30 days. In an emergency (accident, injury, mishap), there is no waiting time.

If the cat is older than 8

The upper age limit is the first thing the owner of an older animal trips over. With most insurers the entry age goes up to 8–9 years. But Uelzener insures cats over eight as well, including those with pre-existing conditions.

The rule that applies everywhere: the illness must be diagnosed after the contract is in place, not before. With a healthy cat there are options even at ten; with a diagnosis at three there are almost none.

Dental treatment and tartar removal for cats in Germany

Dental health is an important aspect not only for people, but also for pets. Cats often develop dental problems over time that can lead to the need for tooth extractions, especially in old age. However, most basic pet insurance policies for cats either do not cover dental treatment at all, or only partially compensate for it.

There are additional insurance packages that include extended cover for dental procedures, such as professional cleaning, treatment of oral diseases and tooth extractions. This is particularly relevant given the high cost of such services in Germany. For example, a bill for the extraction three of the cat's teeth can be a significant amount, which comes as an unpleasant surprise for owners:

Cat insurance in Germany: frequently asked questions

Does a cat need liability insurance?

A separate Katzenhaftpflicht is not compulsory in any federal state in Germany. Damage caused by a cat is normally covered by the owner’s private liability insurance (Privathaftpflichtversicherung) — but only if the contract says so explicitly. It is worth checking your own policy: with some tariffs, pets other than dogs are included automatically.

How much does cat insurance cost?

Surgery-only cover from €7 a month. Separate dental cover from €5. Full health cover from €14. Minimum premiums as of August 2026: young cat, basic terms, with a deductible. The final premium depends on age, breed and on whether the cat goes outdoors.

Does it affect the price whether the cat is a Wohnungskatze or a Freigänger?

Yes. A cat that goes outside is more often involved in accidents and territorial fights and picks up more infections — the risk is higher, and some insurers reflect that in the premium or in the terms. A Wohnungskatze is usually cheaper. That said, “indoor” does not mean “risk-free”: falls from balconies and swallowed objects are among the most common reasons for surgery.

What if the cat is older than 8?

Uelzener insures cats from the first day of life and sets no upper age limit for acceptance — for an older cat that is usually the main route. Cats with pre-existing conditions can also be accepted there: a health check is carried out and individual diagnoses may be excluded from cover. HanseMerkur sets the entry age for a new contract at 8 years.

Is spaying a cat covered?

If the operation is medically indicated (pyometra, tumour), it is covered like any other surgery. Elective spaying without a medical reason does not count as treatment, but several insurers pay a one-off contribution from the preventive-care allowance — usually between €100 and €300. Whether it exists and how much depends on the tariff.

Does the insurance cover dental treatment and scale removal?

Teeth are among the most common reasons cats see a vet. Separate dental cover costs from €5 a month. In health tariffs dental treatment is usually capped at an annual amount, and preventive scale removal is almost never part of basic cover — with Uelzener it is added through the Gesundheit PLUS module. Check this in the specific tariff.

What does Katzen-OP-Versicherung cover, and what does it not?

It covers anaesthesia, the procedure itself, the hospital stay and the related aftercare — typically 30 to 60 days after surgery depending on the tariff. It does not cover ordinary consultations, lab work, medication outside the operation, vaccinations or preventive care. It is the cheap way to close the most expensive risk: surgery for an intestinal blockage or a fracture easily passes a thousand euros.

Does the cover apply abroad?

Yes. With the major insurers, temporary stays abroad are covered worldwide for up to 12 months. For the trip itself you need a microchip and an EU-Heimtierausweis with a valid rabies vaccination — that is an entry requirement, not an insurance one.

What happens if I move or change vet?

The contract applies throughout Germany and is not tied to a practice, so changing vet does not affect cover. You do need to give the insurer your new address: the region feeds into the premium calculation and it can change when you move. For an overview of policy types and prices see the section pet insurance in Germany; if there is also a dog in the household, see dog insurance.

Contract terms: what each line actually means

You will see these terms in any German insurer’s offer. Here is what each of them means.

Term in the contractWhat it means
pet insurance for catsFull health cover: treatment and surgery, and depending on the tariff also check-ups and vaccinations.
Katzen-OP-VersicherungSurgery only. Outpatient treatment is not included, which is why the premium is lower.
Operationen unbegrenztNo annual cap on surgery. If there is a cap, the owner pays everything above it.
Behandlungen unbegrenztNo annual cap on treatment.
Gebührenordnung für Tierärzte (GOT)The official German fee schedule for veterinary services. The vet may multiply the base rate by a factor — the contract states up to which factor the insurer pays.
excessDeductible: the share of the bill the owner pays. The higher it is, the lower the premium.
Kastration / Sterilisation (nicht medizinisch notwendig)Whether neutering or spaying without medical need is covered.
Health screeningsPreventive check-ups and vaccinations.
MedikamenteWhether medication prescribed by the vet is reimbursed.
Diagnostik vor BehandlungX-ray, ultrasound, CT and MRI before treatment starts.
Unterbringung in TierklinikHow many days of inpatient care the insurer pays for.
Stabiler Beitrag im KatzenalterWhether the premium rises as the cat gets older.
Notfallversorgung in NotdienstzeitenTreatment at night, at weekends and on public holidays — up to which GOT factor it is reimbursed.
Erstattung der NotdienstpauschaleWhether the flat emergency-service fee is reimbursed.
Allgemeine WartezeitThe period after the contract starts during which the insurer does not yet pay.
Besondere WartezeitA longer waiting period for certain illnesses and congenital conditions.

  1. Hello. Could you please tell me, is tooth extraction considered a dental service or a surgical procedure?

    1. Hello Zinaida.
      Tooth extraction is an operation.
For some insurance companies, dental treatment and extraction are listed as a separate block.
